For homeowners

How it works, start to finish

No mystery, no fine print. Here is exactly what happens to your request, who sees what, and when.

A home in the Austin metro, where ValueHomePros matches homeowners with local pros

The flow

The eight things that happen

  1. A homeowner at their kitchen table writing up the work they need done

Step 1: You describe the job

Pick the trade, answer a few questions about the work, give us the zip code where the job is, and add photos if you have them — up to 5.

The photos are the part that matters most. A pro who can see the actual roof, panel or leak can tell you something useful on the first call instead of booking a visit to find out.

  2. A six-digit code arriving by text before a request becomes live

Step 2: We verify your phone number

We text you a six-digit code and you enter it. That is the whole step.

We do this before anything else because a lead nobody can reach is worthless to a pro and useless to you. Verifying up front is also why we can promise a pro that the number they pay for is real, which is what lets us keep the fee low and the shortlist short.

Your number is used to reach you about this job. We do not sell it, and we do not add you to a marketing list.

  3. A residential street in the Austin metro, the area we serve today

Step 3: We check the zip is in our service area

We are live in the Austin metro today. If your zip is not covered yet, we tell you straight away instead of taking the request and going quiet.

You can leave your email and we will let you know when we open in your area. Nothing else happens with it.

  4. A licensed contractor on site, the kind of pro we shortlist

Step 4: A person picks the pros for your job

Nothing here is automatic. Somebody on our team reads your request and hand-picks the pros who actually fit it — at most 3 of them: right trade, works in your zip, licence and insurance current, background check on file.

They are choosing from pros who were already vetted and approved before they could receive a single lead. Nobody buys their way onto that list.

  5. A finished kitchen remodel of the kind homeowners hire a pro for

Step 5: We send it to them, and to nobody else

Only the pros we picked are told your job exists. Your request is not listed anywhere, it is not sold, and it does not go out to a room full of companies who will all start calling you.

Each one gets a text and an email with the job in it — and nothing at all that identifies you.

  6. A roofer inspecting a job before deciding whether to take it on

Step 6: What the pro sees

The trade, the zip code, your answers, how many photos there are, and your description with any phone number, email or street address stripped out of it. That is enough to decide whether the job is a fit.

They do not see your name, phone number, email or address. They get a 30-minute window to respond.

  7. An HVAC technician taking a call about a job they have just accepted

Step 7: One pro takes it, and only then gets your details

Taking the job charges that pro a flat lead fee on the spot. In exchange, your contact details unlock for them and theirs unlock for you, so you can both reach each other.

Exactly one pro can ever take it. The moment one does, the job is closed: everyone else is told it has gone, and nobody else is charged or ever sees who you are. If a pro passes, or the 30 minutes run out, they pay nothing and our team decides where the job goes next.

  8. A painter walking a homeowner through the work at their house

Step 8: You talk to a real person, and you owe us nothing

From here it is between you and the pro: a site visit, a quote, a schedule. We do not take a cut of the job and we do not sit in the middle of it.

If the pro does good work, leaving a review takes a minute and helps the next homeowner.

Trust

How a pro gets sent your job

Every pro applies, and a person reviews the application before they can receive a single lead. Nobody buys their way in.

A verified contractor at work on a customer's home
  • Trade licence, checked by a person

We take the licence number, look it up with the issuing body and confirm it is active and held by the business we are listing. A pro whose licence lapses comes off the shortlist until it is current again.

  • Certificate of insurance on file

General liability at minimum, matched to the business name and in date. If the certificate expires, the pro stops being matched.

  • Background check on the owner

Run on the person who owns the business before they are approved. It is the same standard we would want for someone we let into our own house.

  • Reviews only from real connections

Only a homeowner whose request a pro accepted can review that pro. No anonymous reviews, no reviews bought in bulk, no reviews from people who never met them.

What we do not claim

We are not the ones doing your job, so we cannot guarantee the work. What we can guarantee is that the licence, the insurance and the background check were real and current when we matched you, that only the handful of pros we picked were told about your job, and that we will stop sending a pro work when the evidence says we should. If a matched pro behaves badly, tell us and we will act on it.

Questions

Common questions

What does this cost me?

Nothing. There is no fee, no membership and no upsell for homeowners. Pros pay a flat fee for the leads they accept, and that is the entire business.

Will I be called by a pile of companies?

No. Your job goes to at most 3 hand-picked pros, and exactly one of them can ever take it. As soon as one does, the job is closed — the others are told it has gone and never see who you are.

Why do I have to verify my phone first?

Because the shortlist is hand-built and the pro who takes your job pays real money for it. Verifying first keeps out dead numbers, which keeps the fee low enough that pros can afford to look at every lead properly.

What if the pro who takes it is not right for me?

Tell us. Talking to a pro commits you to nothing and you owe nobody anything, so you can walk away and we will route the job again by hand. A pro who keeps turning out to be the wrong fit stops being sent work.

What if my zip code is not covered yet?

We will say so before you spend time on the form, and you can leave an email address to hear when we open there. We would rather turn you away in ten seconds than take a request we cannot serve.

Can a pro see my street address?

Not from us. We share the zip code so they can judge the drive, and nothing more. You share your address yourself once you have talked to them and decided you want them out.

How quickly will I hear back?

Each pro we send it to gets a 30-minute window to take the job or pass, and most respond well inside it. If nobody takes it in that window, the request lands back with our team and a person routes it again — it does not just sit there.

Are the reviews real?

A review can only be written by a homeowner whose request that pro actually accepted. There is no way to post a review for a pro you were never connected to, in either direction.

Still not sure? Read the pro side of the deal — it is the same story from the other direction.
